Anhalt Blues (Part 2)

Saxony-Anhalt was in the west of the former GDR. Since the reunification this federal state has lost about 20% of its population. Unfortunately it were often the younger people and among them more women than men. This and the below-average birth rate contribute to a significant shift of the age distribution towards the elderly people. This situation is also reflected in the few larger cities such as Magdeburg, Halle and Dessau-Roßlau. However, the majority of the country is rural. Despite the obvious economic upswing in some regions, when I travel through Saxony-Anhalt I have the impression more often than in other areas that many places have been left behind by these developments and that time has somehow stood still there.
